A Great Bookmark

July 18, 2025 by Ken Yates in Blog - Assurance, evangelism, John 20:30-31, John 3:16
The Gospel of John is the only book written specifically for unbelievers, instructing them on how to receive eternal life. That is the purpose of the book (John 20:30-31). Eternal life is given to the one who believes in Jesus for it. It is a life they can never lose.  This teaching is not common

The Hebrew Roots Movement, Part 2

July 17, 2025 by Bob Wilkin in Blog - False Gospel, Galatians 1:8-9, Judaizers
As mentioned in part 1, many people say that HRM proclaims a false gospel that is essentially the same as the false gospel of the Judaizers who sought to lead the believers in Galatia astray (Gal 1:6-9; 2:16; 3:1; 5:4).   Dr. Tim Chaffey, with Answers in Genesis—which holds to a mild form of Lordship Salvation—writes

Coming Out of the Ruins Joyfully

July 16, 2025 by Ken Yates in Blog - Eph 6:12, Gen 3:17, Rapture, Rev 22:17, Rev 22:20
For eight months during World War II, Nazi Germany bombed London, England in an attempt to conquer the nation. There are many photos of the devastation. The people of London had to spend long periods in the subways beneath the city for protection. Food and water were scarce. Many people lost their lives.  Most of

Is Pastor John MacArthur in Heaven?

July 15, 2025 by Bob Wilkin in Blog - Eternal Security, John MacArthur, Perseverance
Dr. John MacArthur, author of The Gospel According to Jesus, famous Lordship Salvation author and preacher, and Pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, CA, was hospitalized last week with pneumonia. Any senior citizen admitted for pneumonia would be in a life-threatening situation. But that is especially true for someone aged eighty-six and with

Teaching Sunday School

July 14, 2025 by Ken Yates in Blog - John, Sunday school, teaching
Most of our churches could use more teachers. Often, the members of a church consider teaching to be the responsibility of the pastor, deacons, and elders. But in at least some cases, we need to be training others to serve as teachers.  Unfortunately, potential teachers often look at this prospect with fear and trembling. That

The Hebrew Roots Movement, Part 1

July 11, 2025 by Bob Wilkin in Blog - Cults, Gal 1:8-9, Hebrew Roots Movement, Sabbatarianism
As the name implies, this is a movement within Christianity that suggests that the Hebrew roots of Christianity are much more profound than is thought and practiced today.   In this view, Christianity has diverged from proper understanding and practice and is far away from its Hebrew roots.   This impacts doctrine and practice.   While I agree

A Fallen Beautiful Tree

July 10, 2025 by Ken Yates in Blog - 2 Cor 3:18, Laodicea, Rev 3:17, rewards, Rom 12:1-2
Until this week, a large tree grew in the middle of our church parking lot. Its shade provided a great place to park your car, keeping it from getting too hot in the sun.  I’ve been attending that church for seventeen years, and that tree was there the whole time. To me, it was beautiful

Did Jimmy Swaggart Fall from Grace?

July 9, 2025 by Bob Wilkin in Blog - (Fall From) Grace, Eternal Security, Galatians 5:4, Immorality
I received a question from a preacher named Mark. He wrote:  Greetings my brothers in the Lord.  I have a request for you. I keep hearing Jimmy Swaggart’s time when he was caught with pornography and a prostitute as his time of “falling from Grace.”  I believe that even some in his camp or ministry

“Saved” Is a Flexible Word

July 8, 2025 by Ken Yates in Blog - Acts 16:31, Rom 6:10, Salvation, Saved
If we are faithful to the Scriptures, we will recognize that the words saved and salvation are flexible. They can refer to different kinds of salvation. GES has many articles pointing out how the word is used in various ways in the NT.  Sometimes, this presents a problem. Many Evangelicals almost automatically assume that when

What Is the Fruit of the Spirit?

July 7, 2025 by Bob Wilkin in Blog - Ephesians 5:9, Galatians 5:22-24
The expression the fruit [karpos, singular in both places] of the Spirit occurs only twice in the Bible — Gal 5:22 and Eph 5:9.  Other similar expressions are the peaceable fruit [karpon, singular] of righteousness (Heb 12:11), the fruit [karpos] of righteousness (Jas 3:18), the fruits [karpōn, plural of karpos, in the MT, singular in

“Have I Shown You My Iron Cross?”

I recently heard a story that I’m pretty confident is true. Most of us have seen pictures of the warehouses at Auschwitz. The Nazis collected all the personal effects—shoes, clothes, jewelry, toys, etc.—of those who died...

What Is Eschatological Salvation, and Do You Have It?

I don’t remember hearing the expression eschatological salvation when I was studying at Dallas Theological Seminary. But over the past thirty years or so I’ve noticed that expression occurring increasingly in the commentary literature. Some pastors are...
