A Fallen Beautiful Tree

July 10, 2025 by Kenneth Yates in Blog - 2 Cor 3:18, Laodicea, Rev 3:17, rewards, Rom 12:1-2
Until this week, a large tree grew in the middle of our church parking lot. Its shade provided a great place to park your car, keeping it from getting too hot in the sun.  I’ve been attending that church for seventeen years, and that tree was there the whole time. To me, it was beautiful

More Than Just Showing Up (2 Cor 5:10)

June 17, 2025 by Kenneth Yates in Blog - Bema, John 5:22, rewards
One of the verses most commonly quoted by grace people is 2 Cor 5:10, in which Paul says that all believers must appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ. There, each believer will either be rewarded for good works or have those rewards withheld because of bad works. It is understandable that this verse is

Promised Glory (Luke 9:26-35)

May 27, 2025 by Kenneth Yates in Blog - 2 Pet 1:16-18, glory, Heb 11:26, Luke 9:26-35, rewards, Suffering
Before Jesus took three of His disciples up the Mount of Transfiguration, He told them things they did not want to hear. He said that He would be rejected by the nation and killed (Luke 9:22). Then He told them that if they wanted to follow Him, they would need to deny what they wanted

Advice from a Champion (Hebrews 11:35-38)

Many argue that Muhammad Ali was the greatest heavyweight boxing champion ever. I remember as a young man watching him train for his bouts. It was brutal. He needed to go through such ordeals because of the beatings he took in the ring. But I still wondered how he endured such suffering. Once, in speaking

Get in the Game

May 8, 2025 by Kenneth Yates in Blog - Failure, Luke 19:12-25, rewards, Servant
If you’ve ever watched a Little League baseball game, there’s always a guy on the bench waiting to play. He wants to hear the coach say, “Billy, get in the game.” No doubt he is nervous, but he’s thrilled when he hears those words. Babe Ruth was one of the greatest baseball players ever. For

Moving in the Right Direction (Mark 12:34)

April 17, 2025 by Kenneth Yates in Blog - 1 Cor 3:10-15, Eternal Rewards, Heb 11:26, Mark 12:34, rewards, Rom 14:12
When I was studying Spanish, I would listen to sermons in Spanish from a church in Mexico called Casa de Oración (“House of Prayer”). The pastor spoke distinctly, which helped me understand the language. He was an Arminian, believing a believer could lose eternal salvation. Sometimes he said that if a Christian continues in sin,

I recently saw a poster with an Apple Watch on it. It was not an advertisement. Instead, it showed the different small components of the watch, along with a quote from the founder of Apple, Steve Jobs. He said, “We are here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise, why else are we here?”

Hearing and Doing: An Opportunity

But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it” (Luke 8:21). In Luke 8:21, the Lord stresses the importance of hearing and doing the wordi of God. Some take this verse as being addressed to unbelievers. They need to hear the

Looking for Good Employees

February 21, 2025 by Kenneth Yates in Blog - Fig Tree, Matt 24:45-47, Prov 27:18, Rev 22:12, rewards
I have a lot of respect for people who can start their own businesses. They’re able to take a chance and do something new. It’s like rolling the dice. It’s exciting. But they don’t take the safe route. In this area, I’m the opposite. I’m happy working for somebody who’s already started a profitable business.
