March 15, 2021 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - church life, fruit of the Spirit, one another, Sanctification
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking

Don’t Let Go and Let God (Luke 6:47-48)

November 6, 2020 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - Christian living, Luke, Sanctification
Each spring, I have the very best intentions of raising a bountiful garden. But by each fall, all I have is a tangled weedy mess and barely a handful of cherry tomatoes to show for it. Any idea why? I recently heard two folksy illustrations comparing the Christian life to farming and gardening that shed

September 17, 2020 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - blessings, Green Letters, Miles J. Stanford, Moses, Sanctification, spiritual maturity, spiritual theology
And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds (Acts 7:22). And with all that pagan learning, what was the first thing Moses did out of the gate to serve God? He murdered an Egyptian! Moses was forty years old at the time (Acts 7:23)—my age.

September 14, 2020 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - Miles Stanford, Sanctification
The diamond industry has long been marred by violence and exploitation—hence the term “blood diamonds.” That tragic reality has helped fuel efforts to discover ways to make synthetic diamonds. Recently, German scientists were able to make diamonds out of peanut butter! The process involved applying staggering amounts of pressure over a few weeks to the

Sanctification Through Falling Deeper in Love: A Lesson from Anthony Norris Groves

August 27, 2020 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - Anthony Norris Groves, love, Sanctification
How can you be holy? How can you live a “deeper” life with Christ? I am reading a biography of Anthony Norris Groves, written by G. H. Lang. So far, it is excellent. Groves was one of the pioneers of the faith missions movement—he went to the mission field without salary or support and depended

You Should Read Christian Biographies

August 20, 2020 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - Christian biographies, Robert Chapman, Sanctification
My friend Allen Rea is always reading inspiring Christian biographies, and I often ask him for recommendations. Frankly, although I read a lot, I do not read many biographies. But Allen inspired me to pick some up. For example, I’m currently reading a biography of Robert Chapman, who became influential among the Plymouth Brethren. Apparently,
