The gospel message has been muddled by false teaching, but the Bible is clear–eternal life is given to the one who believes that Jesus saves them by His death on the cross. J. Vernon McGee on Repentance and Salvation

November 18, 2020 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - back-loaded gospel, believing, Faith, J. Vernon McGee, Repentance, Salvation
Even the most gifted Bible teachers can sometimes preach a confusing saving message. For example, I’m sure most readers of this blog are familiar with Dr. J. Vernon McGee’s Thru the Bible commentary. I’ve been reading through his comments on Luke’s Gospel and found his remarks on Luke 3:8 to be confusing. “John’s message was

A Gospel Coalition Council Member Says You Need Good Deeds for Salvation

October 29, 2020 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - Gospel Coalition, Luke, Repentance, works salvation
I recently saw a quote attributed to Martin Luther that said, “Every week I preach justification by faith to my people because every week they forget it.” One of our ministry’s unpleasant but necessary tasks is to point out when popular authors and preachers have forgotten about justification by faith apart from works. Instead, they

Clarence Larkin on National Repentance (Matthew 4:17)

March 24, 2020 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - Clarence Larkin, gospel of the kingdom, Repentance
A basic Biblical distinction more or less ignored by most Christian theologians is the difference between “the Gospel of the kingdom,” as emphasized in the Synoptic Gospels, and the “promise of eternal life,” as emphasized in John’s Gospel. Part of the kingdom gospel included the call to repentance. Since most theologians improperly mix the promise

Repentance and Salvation in the Old Testament

May 24, 2019 by Bob Wilkin in Blog - Ezekial, Isaiah 55:7, Jonah, Repentance
Introduction The English word repent is only found ten times in the OT, and one of those ten (Num 23:19) is a statement that God does not repent. In the remaining nine places, the underlying Hebrew word is shuv (or the noun teshuvah), which is most often translated as turn. The noun repentance is not

Owning Our Theology

January 15, 2019 by Ken Yates in Blog - Free Grace, hate, Repentance
In 1 John 3:15, John writes, “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” Those of us in the Free Grace movement maintain that this verse deals with fellowship with the Lord. A believer can indeed hate his brother. If he does, he is out
