Literature Lair

Some good material on the gospel is not available through bookstores or library shelves. However, it can easily be obtained. I am referring to theses and dissertations. They can be obtained through public libraries through a service called Interlibrary Loan.

Kenneth Baker Quick wrote an excellent thesis entitled “An Exegetical and Soteriological Evaluation of the Parables of the Four Soils” (Th.M. thesis, Dallas Theological Seminary, 1977). He argues that the first three soils represent believers. This work contains profitable discussions of perseverance, rewards, and the New Testament expression “the salvation of the soul (psyche)”.

Robert Nicholas Wilkin wrote a theses entitled “An Exegetical Evaluation of the Reformed Doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints” (Th.M. thesis, Dallas Theological Seminary, 1982). In it I discuss James 2.14-26, 1 John 3.9, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Philippians 1:6 and various other passages. I argue that the scriptures do not say that believers will necessarily persevere in a life of obedience. Perseverance in a godly lifestyle is our aim, not a given. Effort is required to realize this aim. However, the degree to which one succeeds has nothing to do with one’s position. All believers, including carnal believers, are eternally secure.
