Update on Sharon’s Recovery from Cancer and Chemo

July 29, 2019 by Bob Wilkin in Blog

Many of you are aware that Sharon underwent surgery for what turned out to be ovarian cancer last December. You have been praying for her as she underwent six chemo treatments, lost her hair, developed neuropathy in her feet, and lost lots of weight.

Sharon’s last chemo was on May 24. After that she suffered from a low platelet count and a low white count. Her weight dropped to 111 (from 128) and her feet hurt, especially when she walked more than a little. And Sharon loves walking.

Three days ago, Sharon began to feel better. The neuropathy in her feet was totally gone at times and at other times it was very minor. Her weight came back to 115. Her platelet count got up to normal and her white count, though still below normal, is now high enough that her oncologist said she could have her teeth cleaned.

So, she is on the mend. Here is what she wrote:

God has answered your prayers!!

I am still in awe! I havent even been going places because it was so uncomfortable to walk on any kind of floor in any kind of shoes. It was like walking on glass. Neuropathy is bad.

I could only stand in the kitchen and wash my own dishes for a few minutes. Then I had to go sit down.

I got up early day before yesterday and went to Bible study even though I really didnt want to go. All I’ve been doing is sitting at home and thinking about my feet. So, I started getting ready. And then it hit me that I dont feel that glass. My feet didn’t hurt.

I got to eat out with friends and my feet still did not hurt.

It is now two days later, and I still don’t have any pain in my feet. Im amazed. I have been brought to my knees in praise to God. I didn’t even believe it would happen. I’ve been hurting for 6 months and I just figured this will be my new cross to bear. The internet told me its not curable and all of your nerve endings in your feet have died because of the strong chemo. Even one nurse told me I’d probably lose feeling in my feet and have problems balancing.

Well, Im finally understanding why you cant read and believe the internet.

I must share it with yall because I know the last time a lot of you saw me at the conference I was in tears and couldnt walk without pain.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow and thank you for your prayers.

Im definitely not missing Bible study next Wednesday.

The oncologist said that there is a 70 to 80% chance that her cancer will not return. That means that despite Sharon’s optimism, we are not out of the woods yet. Sharon will have visits every three months for the next two years. Then every six months. Then once a year for life. So, we would appreciate your continued prayers. Please pray as well that the neuropathy does not return.

I would ask for your continued prayers for me as well. I was strongly impacted by her surgery and chemo treatments. I still feel a bit shell shocked, though it is great to see her back to her old self.
