In Eph 2:8-9, Paul says that everlasting life is “the gift of God.” Well, some object when I say that, because Paul actually says that salvation is the gift of God (“By grace you have been saved through faith…it is the gift of God, not of works…”). But three verses earlier, Paul makes it clear that the “by–grace–through–faith“ salvation refers to being made alive spiritually (Eph 2:5).
In John 4:10, the Lord Jesus spoke of “the gift of God.” In verse 14 He made it clear that the gift of God is everlasting life.
Everlasting life is a gift. But it is conditional. In order to receive this gift, we must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for that life (John 3:16; 4:10-26; 5:24; 6:35, 37, 39, 47; 11:25-27; 20:31).
But isn’t this gift free to the recipient? Yes. See Rev 21:6 and 22:17. This water of life is free to anyone who wants it.
There is a difference between a cost and a condition. Something can be given conditionally, but at no cost to the recipient. That is the case with everlasting life. The Lord Jesus Christ paid the full price for this gift.
But this gift is not given to all. It is given to those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
James 1:17-18 also calls everlasting life the gift of God, received by believing “the word of truth” concerning that life.
Many people grasp the conditionality of the gift, but get the condition wrong.
Some say the condition is true faith, which they explain as turning from our sins, surrendering, and committing to serve God for the rest of our lives. Nope. It is faith in Christ.
Some say the condition is receiving Christ, which they say is inviting Him into your life. Nope. It is faith in Christ.
Some say the condition is confessing Christ, which they say is walking the aisle. Nope. It is faith in Christ.
Some say the condition is baptism, being immersed in water. Nope. It is faith in Christ.
Everlasting life is the gift of God. That is good news, for sure (see Gal 1:6-9; 2:16). But make sure you know that you’ve met the condition. It is simple. Jesus promises everlasting life to all who believe in Him for it. No strings attached. Once you believe in Him, you are secure forever. Everlasting life is indeed ever-lasting life.
