Word Fast

Word Fast

February 27, 2017 by Shawn Lazar in Blog

Have you ever heard of a “Word fast”?

It’s when you cut out TV, movies, newspapers, radio, and every other kind of teaching from your life, and just read the Word of God.

In other words, you fast from eating up the world’s message, and feast on God’s message.

I used to waste far too much time on TV. Then I had kids, and thanks to them, I have very little time for things like that. (That and the fact that Hollywood has been getting more and more unapologetically perverse makes it harder to watch TV anyway.)

Moreover, I commute about two miles to work, so I have no time to listen to radio in my car.

And thanks to the nature of my work at GES, I’m studying the Word all the time.

You could say I’ve been doing an unintentional Word fast.

And it’s been great.

I’ve never been more excited about the Word of God. I’ve always loved it, but that love has grown even deeper the more I get into it.

My faith is being built up (“faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ,” Rom 10:17), and my worldview is being framed according to God’s perspective.

I’ve read it takes between 12-15 hours to read through the NT. If you read 1 hr a day, you could easily finish reading the NT in two weeks during your Word fast. If you took all the time you spent listening to the radio, or watching TV, you could finish much faster. And like many people, you might find you prefer to be in the Word rather than, say, cable TV.

Or, instead of reading through the NT, you could find a teaching series on a particular book, and just listen to that for two weeks. The internet is filled with resources like that. Try going to our church tracker list, visit some church websites, and I’m sure you’ll find sermon series to build you up.

God created the universe with a word, and that same Word has to power to create abundant life in you.

I recently heard a story that I’m pretty confident is true. Most of us have seen pictures of the warehouses at Auschwitz. The Nazis collected all the personal effects—shoes, clothes, jewelry, toys, etc.—of those who died...

What Is Eschatological Salvation, and Do You Have It?

I don’t remember hearing the expression eschatological salvation when I was studying at Dallas Theological Seminary. But over the past thirty years or so I’ve noticed that expression occurring increasingly in the commentary literature. Some pastors are...
