Preview of the Spring 2018 Journal

July 31, 2018 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - journal, subscriptions

We publish the Journal of the Grace Evangelical Society twice a year.

The Journal is where we publish longer, more academic articles, as well as book reviews. But the articles are written at an undergraduate level.

In the current issue—the Spring 2018 Journal—there are some articles you might be interested in.

Ken Yates addresses what Paul meant in Acts 20:21 when he said, “testifying to Jews and also to Greeks, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” Is Paul making repentance a condition of salvation in that verse? If not, what did he mean? Yates offers a clear, common-sense solution.

Have you ever wondered how the NT could be the very words of Jesus if it’s all translated from what He taught in Aramaic? The only way the NT could be word-for-word what Jesus said is if the Lord taught in Greek. Is that possible? Jim Hitt surveys the evidence showing that Greek was widely used in Jesus’ day, and there is strong evidence that the Lord spoke and taught in that language. To give you just one example—James, the brother of the Lord, evidently wrote and spoke Greek as evidenced by the letter he wrote!

Have you ever been disturbed when a Calvinist believes something privately, only to contradict himself by preaching something else publicly? For example, when a Calvinist pastor privately believes that Jesus died only for the elect, and no one can know if they are elect, but then publicly tells an individual that Jesus loves him and died for him? Isn’t that inconsistent? If you recognize that problem, you’ll enjoy Allan Rea’s article about the ethical inconsistency in Calvinist pastoral ministry.

Have you ever wondered when the Bema will occur? John Claeys argues it will happen after the Tribulation, but before the Millennium. Want to know why? Read the Journal!

That’s just a taste of the new issue. If you love thinking Biblically and deeply, you’ll really benefit from getting the Journal.

The spring issue will go out in the middle of August (okay, okay, “spring” is relative). I am putting Journal subscriptions on sale here for a limited time.
