Eternal Security and the Stanley Cup

Eternal Security and the Stanley Cup

July 1, 2006 by GES Webmaster in Grace in Focus Articles

This story can be found at www.carolinahurricanes.com .

Recently, the Carolina Hurricanes, formerly known as the Hartford Whalers, won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history by beating the Edmonton Oilers. While the fans in Raleigh, NC were as excited as ever, Glen Wesley was also exuberant, but he has his priorities in order.

Wesley, a veteran defenseman for the Carolina Hurricanes, had played in over 155 postseason games yet without a championship. Among all of the active players in the NHL, Wesley had gone the longest without winning the Stanley Cup.

Prior to the final game, Wesley was asked about his lack of a title. “I always say ‘God knows,’” Wesley said. “I trust that, and I know that if it’s His will, then great—but if not, I’ve had a great ride. I don’t hold that as a priority.

“My eternal salvation is far more important to me—it’s more important to have that eternal security and one day be at the feet of the Lord—than to be at the foot of the Cup,” he said. “Life here on earth is temporary, and Heaven is eternal.”
