What You Can Depend On

What You Can Depend On

March 18, 2019 by Shawn Lazar in Blog - character of God, goodness, theology

You can’t depend on the world.

You can’t depend on the economy.

You certainly can’t depend on politics or politicians.

You can’t depend on the favors people owe you (or what you think they owe you).

You can’t depend on your next sale or paycheck.

You can’t depend on your mom beating cancer.

You can’t depend on retiring with enough money to keep you middle class.

You can’t depend on your daughter walking with the Lord.

You can’t depend on real estate going up.

You can’t depend on creation or created things because creation is contingent—it’s unstable and fallen and largely in rebellion against God, under the devil’s control (2 Cor 4:4). How could you depend upon it? Why would you try?

So what can you depend on?

God’s goodness.

That’s not the same thing as saying God is predictable, or that you can depend on God to fulfill your wishes like a real life genie. You can’t know if God will heal or not, lead you to this job or that one, deliver you or let you suffer through a trial.

But here’s what you can depend upon through all that uncertainty—God’s goodness:

For the Lord is good;

His lovingkindness is everlasting

And His faithfulness to all generations (Ps 100:5).

The Lord is good. There’s no hedging about His goodness. There are no qualifications, no need to carefully explain the relevant exceptions, or where God’s goodness does not apply.

That’s what He is.

Good.

Moreover, God’s lovingkindness isn’t temporary or limited or fluctuates the way my love can fluctuate even to those closest to me. No—God’s lovingkindness is everlasting.

And His faithfulness doesn’t change with the weather but continues to all generations.

The world is shifting sand. You can’t depend on it.

But God’s goodness is bedrock. You can depend on Him.
