Recommended Bible Study Tools

Recommended Bible Study Tools

June 30, 2020 by Bob Wilkin in Blog - Bible Concordances, Bible Dictionaries, Bible Lexicons, commentaries, Systematic Theologies

Here’s another good question:

I respect your Biblically centered scholarship and theological astuteness, and I would like your advice. As a student of Free Grace Theology can you recommend for me what study tools to use to make my study efforts more effective and productive? For example, what lexicons, concordance, Bible dictionary, systematic theology books, commentaries, etc., do you recommend? I would like to know what resources you use (if any) coming from the other perspectives (Calvinistic and Arminian). I would like to have them as well for reference use.

Let’s take those one at the time.

Lexicons (dictionaries)

Bauer, Danker, Arndt, and Gingrich, 3rd edition (2000). Need to know Greek.

Brown, Driver, and Briggs. Need to know Hebrew.

Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words.

New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology (NIDNTT).

Concordances

Strong’s or Young’s Exhaustive Concordance.

Englishman’s Greek Concordance.

Logos Bible Software Concordance.

Bible Dictionaries

Zondervan’s Bible Dictionary.

Unger’s Bible Dictionary.

Halley’s Bible Handbook.

Systematic Theologies

Lectures in Systematic Theology by Thiessen.

Basic Theology by Charles Ryrie.

Commentaries

Tyndale OT and NT commentary series.

Grace New Testament Commentary. One volume.

Believer’s Bible Commentary, NT. William MacDonald and Art Farstad.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary, OT and NT editions.

The Tony Evans Bible Commentary.

Commentaries on John, Romans, Hebrews, James, 1-2 Peter, 1-3 John by Zane Hodges.

I have a list of individual commentaries that I recommend, but they take up way too much room. I’ll add more blog posts in which I list the individual commentaries I recommend on the NT and the OT, though neither list is complete.

Most of the sources listed above do not come from a Free Grace perspective. The ones that do are bolded. MacDonald and Farstad is mostly Free Grace.
